Severe Weather Safety

Updated 1/30/20

Fairhope Soccer Club is committed to providing the best and safest youth soccer environment as possible to our members. Understand these decisions are based on the forecasts, which are not always reliable indicators, and we do not make the decision to cancel trainings or games lightly.  We will always take into consideration field conditions as well as driving conditions to get to the fields.  Our goal is to communicate any cancellations as soon as a decision has been made.  Often we will wait to make a decision in the hope that conditions improve that will permit us to train/play. We appreciate your support and understanding when we are faced with making these difficult decisions.

RULE:  If you hear thunder, clear the fields.  If you see lightning, clear the fields.

When severe weather threatens while players, parents & coaches are at Fairhope Soccer Complex, the following steps will take place:

  • A 3 air horn blast means indicates ALL players & parents must immediately clear the fields, seek shelter or return to your car.
  • The club official will monitor the severe weather threat for 30 minutes. DO NOT LEAVE SHELTER OR CAR.
  • When severe weather conditions no longer exist after 30 minutes, the horn will blast 3 shorter bursts
  • You may return to the field after the 3 shorter blasts have sounded
  • If severe weather conditions continue, a club broadcast email and a RainOut text message will inform you that ALL ACTIVITES ARE CANCELED

Lightning Facts:  Approximately 70 people are killed by lightning and 400 are injured in any given year in the U.S. (NOAA) On average, 10% of strike victims die and 70% suffer serious long term effects. (NOAA) The second most likely place of occurrence for a person to be struck is at a ball field or open field. Bolts of lightning reach temperatures as high as 50,000 degrees. The average thunderstorm is six to ten miles wide. The average rate of travel of a thunderstorm is 25 mph. Lightning can strike from as far away as 10 miles.
